The Ginger Musical
August 13, 2015 - September 20, 2015

She danced her way into our hearts in the arms of Fred Astaire, setting the gold standard for grace and elegance on the silver screen.  In her surprising true-life story, we follow Ginger Rogers from the vaudeville stage at the age of 15 through her ascension to Hollywood goddess.  The Musical is a candy box of show-stopping dance numbers and a parade of beloved songs. It is the story of a small-town girl from Texas who dazzled the whole wide world, playing everything from 'the girl next door' to the modern woman with a mind of her own. Discover some surprising revelations about the movie legend.

Backwards in High Heels was conceived and developed in 2007 by Lynette Barkley and Christopher McGovern, with book, musical arrangements and original songs by McGovern. It takes its title from a widely quoted quip from a 1982 “Frank & Ernest” cartoon about Astaire and Rogers: “Sure he was great, but don’t forget that Ginger Rogers did everything he did — backwards and in high heels.”

Combining original songs by Christopher McGovern with vintage movie musical numbers like 'Fascinatin' Rhythm,' 'Let's Call the Whole Thing Off,' 'Embraceable You,' “Let’s Face the Music and Dance,” and 'A Fine Romance,' the musical is a toe-tapping account of the public and private life of the actress best known as Fred Astaire's dance partner.   Ginger Rogers walked away from her partnership with Astaire at the peak of its success, going on to become an acclaimed actress as well as one of the industry's first women to demand equal pay. The story follows Rogers from the time she arrived in Hollywood as a 14-year old aspiring starlet through 1940, when the 37-year-old actress won the Academy Award for Best Actress for the film 'Kitty Foyle.'"

The musical premiered at Florida Stage in 2007, where it sold out its entire run.
