Westchester Broadway Theatre has done it again. Their celebration of 40 years of Broadway musicals continues with The Wizard of Oz, and what a wonderful show this is. As many times as we’ve seen the film version of this classic story, the enjoyment never fades.
The stage production stays true to the story we all know and love. The costumes and makeup that transform each character are excellent, the choreography wonderful, but the special effects are truly outstanding.
The audience is propelled into the story, to the farmhouse, through the tornado, to Munchkinland and finally to Oz. The characters are wonderfully cast. Devon Perry is a delightful Dorothy Gale and well-trained Nigel is a loveable Toto. Excellent performances by Nadine Zahr (Auntie Em), Benjamin Dean (Uncle Henry/Guard), Nicole Tori (Almira Gulch/Wicked Witch of the West), Ken Jennings (Professor Marvel/Wizard of Oz), Michelle Dawson (Glinda), Jimmy Larkin (Mayor of Munchkinland) and the entire Ensemble and the Munchkins.
Dorothy’s friends, whom she meets along her journey, are portrayed by Tim Dolan as Hunk (Scarecrow), Chris Kind as Hickory (Tin Man), Jayson Elliott as Zeke (Lion). Their transformation from workers on the farm to the beloved friends is a tribute to the acting skills of these performers as well as to the makeup and costume designers.
The Wizard of Oz is on stage through September 21. Tickets at www.BroadwayTheatre.com or call 914-592-2222. Located at One Broadway Plaza, Elmsford, NY 10523.
