Sister Act at Westchester Broadway TheatrePublished: Tuesday, April 17, 2018 By: GARY CHATTMAN Source: Westchester Arts & Education Review
Boy—can that sister—act! I’m referring to Zuri Washington, who, as Deloris Van Cartier—the sister in the title. She is An AMERICAN IDOL! Buy your tickets fast—please catch her performance before she opens on Broadway or stars in Hollywood. She has portrayed many in her career—once she played Denna in “Dreamgirls.” I googled her name—cause I wanted to find out more about this “STAR” with a capital S-T-A-R! Her name is derived from the Swahili word for “beautiful” and Arabic for “brilliant,” and, boy, does this name fit her! She takes the stage—no, she storms the stage—and this part is just made for her!
The Whoopi Goldberg movie (where this musical derives) tells of how Deloris witnesses a murder by a mobster (a star in his own right—Philip Michael Baskerville) of a stool pigeon. Now, she’s on the run. Right! She becomes a nun—a jive nun, at that. All these religious people hide her—she meets Mother Superior—Mary Jo McConnell (what talent is found in this production!) who can’t understand this “novice” nun. “Take Me To Heaven” for, “Here Within These Walls,” she DOES NOT find “It’s Good to Be a Nun.” No, Delores upends the nun’s choir—adds a bit of the outside world to Sisters like Mary Robert (who has an angelic voice—“The Life I Never Led”! She gives life to this convent! It all works out in the end (it is a Broadway musical!)
SISTER ACT at the Westchester Broadway Theatre continues the long line of superior quality music theatre for Westchesterites. Why go pay $195 (yes, $195) a ticket for a Broadway show--$40 for parking—and God-knows-what for dinner? Go to Elmsford—WESTCHESTER BROADWAY THEATRE—you have free parking! Great food! Wonderful entertainment!
It’s a FUN show! It’s 2018! We need FUN! We need HAPPINESS! WE NEED WESTCHESTER BROADWAY THEATRE’S PRODUCTION OF “SISTER ACT!” We need directors/choreographers like Donna Drake! We need stars like Zuri Washington! This Washington didn’t cross the Delaware—she conquered the county of Westchester! Regardless of your religious faith—you will become converted to the JOY of “SISTER ACT!”
