In the Heights opens at the Westchester Broadway Theatre on Thursday, Feb. 7 with Arielle Jacobs returning to the role of Nina, a role she played both in the musical’s national tour and on Broadway where she followed Jordan Sparks to the close of the show.
Perry Young plays Usnavi and Christina Aranda appears as Abuela Claudia.
Cast members who are Westchester County natives include FaTye of Dobbs Ferry in the role of Benny and Joey Sanzaro of Pleasantville as Piragua.
National tour choreographer Morgan Marcell and assistant/dance captain Antuan “Magic” Raimone repeat the choreography on the Elmsford stage that captured a Best Choreography Tony award for Andy Blankenbuehler, the show’s original choreographer.
The story takes place during a few days in the life of a tight-knit community in New York City’s Washington Heights and centers on the importance of home, family and the need to find one’s place. The score and dance span three generations of music, from rap to moving ballads to salsa.
When it appeared on Broadway in 2008, the play also won Tony awards for Best Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Orchestrations; it received a Grammy for Best Musical Show Album.
The new production is presented and directed by John Fanelli, a veteran play director for Westchester Broadway Theatre and the founder of the recently formed Standing Ovation Studios in Armonk.
