“The Bikinis,” a Musical Beach Party at Westchester Broadway TheatrePublished: Friday, February 10, 2017 By: George Dacre Source: Rockland County Times
Four very talented performers and a great back up on-stage band provide 35 memorable numbers in this show that reflects on the 60s and 70s and is non-stop fun at the venerable venue that is getting close to doing its 200th production.
Katy Blake, Anne Fraser Thomas, Joanna Young and Karyn Quackenbush do non-stop singing and acting out the music that includes “Itsy Bitsy, Teeny Weeny, Yellow Polka Dot Bikini,” “Under The Boardwalk,” “Where The Boys Are,” “Chapel Of Love,” “The Twist,” and many, many more. The bikini girls (think Jersey girl) chat up each tune telling the stories of the years of protest (the Viet Nam War), eroding sandy beaches, hippies, beach memories, and boys.
There are also memories of Nancy Sinatra “(These Boots Are Made For Walking),” Elvis Presley “(Shakin’ In The Sand),” and flower people. It is great nostalgia and great music with the audience included. There is a sixties dance craze medley, “Look What You’ve Done To My Song, Ma,” “When Will I Be Loved,” “Last Dance,” “I Will Survive,” and a finale “Beach Party.”
Music Director Dan Pardo has it all put together vibrantly and it is one fun musical evening. Plus dinner. Director and Choreographer Ray Roderick has this group of young ladies and musicians up to the task. I rate “The Bikinis” Three out of Four Stars.
