Westchester Broadway Theatre is known for providing excellent productions of Broadway shows with wonderful performers. Year after year, the choices of shows and the presentations are as good as anything you will find on The Great White Way. To this writer, the current production, Mamma Mia!, is by far the best show ever seen at WBT, and one of the best shows seen anywhere. The entire cast delivers an extraordinary performance that no one should miss. If you grew up enjoying the music of ABBA, this is a must see show. If you enjoy outstanding singing and dancing, this is your go-to show. Each and every performer is absolutely sensational. Kudos go to all those involved in producing and directing, and especially the fabulous costumes.
The story of Mamma Mia! is a very simple one. Sophie is a 20-year-old girl, about to marry her fiancé, Sky. She longs to have her father walk her down the aisle but has no idea who he is. Finding her mother’s old diary, Sophie learns her mother had a love affair with three men 20 years ago. Believing one of the three men – Sam Carmichael, Bill Austin, Harry Bright - is her father, three months prior to the wedding she sends each an invitation to the wedding, writing in her mother Donna’s name, without letting her mother know.
The day before the wedding, on the Greek island of Kalokairi, the guests begin to arrive. First to arrive are Donna’s old best friends, Tanya, a rich woman who has been married and divorced three times, and Rosie, a single, carefree woman. The trio was once a girl group, “Donna and the Dynamos.” The three reminisce and share how their lives have been. Later that same day, the three men arrive, and they agree not to let Donna know that Sophie invited them. Donna is surprised to see her three former lovers and is upset by their presence. Sophie is sure she will know which one is her father but is confused when she can’t figure it out. She has a nightmare in which all three possible fathers fight for the right to walk her down the aisle. On the wedding day, she decides to have her mother walk her down the aisle. In the end, Sophie and Sky decide marriage is not necessary and, not wanting wedding preparations to be wasted, Sam proposes to Donna, she accepts, and at the end of the day, Sophie and Sky leave to tour the world.
Mamma Mia! was written by Catherine Johnson and is based on the wonderful music of ABBA, the Swedish songwriting group. Among the timeless songs are Mamma Mia, Dancing Queen, Honey Honey, S.O.S., Take A Chance On Me, Thank You For The Music, and so many more wonderful compositions.
The superb cast consists of Michelle Dawson (Donna), Elise Kinnon (Tanya), Jennifer Swiderski (Rosie), Xander Chauncey (Sam), Kilty Reidy (Harry), Brent Bateman (Bill), Mariah MacFarlane (Sophie), Nathan Cockroft (Sky), and the Ensemble: Deshawn Bowens, Brian Dillon, Brett-Marco Glauser, Alicia Hemann, Cameron Anika Hill, Lily Lewis, Sydney Patrick, Bailey Purvis, Matty Rickard, Kyle White, and Connor Wince.
